I didn’t see an oat until I was in my thirties. It’s not as if I didn’t know what an oat was. Of course I did; in all the (mostly British) literature I read in my younger years, there were numerous instances of horses being fed oats. Occasionally, there was mention of some piss-poor peasant family eating oatmeal. Oats sounded, frankly, utterly unexciting. मैंने तीस साल की उम्र तक ओट्स (जई) नहीं देखा था। ऐसा नहीं है कि मुझे यह न पता हो कि ओट होता क्या था। बिल्कुल पता था, मैंने छुटपन में जितना भी साहित्य (ज़्यादातर ब्रिटिश) पढ़ा था, उनमें घोड़ों को ओट खिलाने के कई प्रसंग आए थे। उनमें कभी-कभी, किसी बेहद ग़रीब किसान परिवार द्वारा ओट्स खाने का ज़िक्र आ जाता था। ईमानदारी से कहूँ, तो ओट्स का उल्लेख कुछ हद तक उबाऊ लगता था। ब्लैक पुडिंग और हैगिस, स्पॉटेड डिक और समर पुडिंग (भले इनमें से कोई ख़राब लगता तो कोई दिलकश) कम से कम दिलचस्प तो लगते थे। खानपान के मामले में मैं ख़ूब जोखिम उठाती हूँ, इसलिए इन चीज़ों को कभी-न-कभी आज़माना मेरे एजेंडा में था। पर ओट्स, कभी नहीं! 2006 में पेप्सीको इंडिया, भारत में क्वेकर ओट्स ले आई। अचानक ही, अंकल जैसा दिखने वाला, मुस्कराता हुआ…

ഓട്ട്സ് എന്ന വസ്തു ആദ്യമായി കാണുവാൻ മുപ്പതുവയസ്സ് കഴിയേണ്ടിവന്നു എനിയ്ക്ക്. എന്താണ് ഓട്ട്സ് എന്നറിയാഞ്ഞിട്ടല്ല. തീർച്ചയായും എനിയ്ക്കതറിയാമായിരുന്നു; ചെറുപ്പകാലത്ത് ഞാൻ വായിച്ചുകൂട്ടിയ പുസ്തകങ്ങളിലെല്ലാം ( മിക്കവാറും ബ്രിട്ടീഷ് ) കുതിരകളെ ഓട്ട്സ് തീറ്റുന്ന രംഗങ്ങൾ ധാരാളമായിരുന്നു. വല്ലപ്പോഴുമെങ്കിലും ചില പട്ടിണിപ്പാവങ്ങളായ കർഷകരും ഓട് മീൽ കഴിക്കുന്നതായും വായിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്…
