हिंदीत एक प्रसिद्ध म्हण आहे ‘ सुबह काशी, शामे अवध और शबे मालवा’ म्हणजे सकाळ असावी तर काशीसारखी, संध्याकाळ अवधेसारखी तर रात्र माळवासारखी. माळवा, म्हणजे मध्य भारतातल्या विंध्य पर्वतरांगांमधलं पठार. इतर भागांच्या तुलनेत माळवातलं हवामान सुखद गारवा देणारं आणि रमणीय आहे. इथली जमीन तर सुपीक आहेच, शिवाय बघावं तिथे पाणीच पाणी आहे! अशा ‘माळवा’तला माझा जन्म आहे. — कलापिनी कोमकली

एक जानी-मानी कहावत है- सुबह काशी, शामे अवध और शबे मालवा. यह वह भू-भाग है जहाँ की आबो-हवा प्रदेश के दूसरे भागों की तुलना में शीतल, संतुलित और रम्य है. तो मेरा जन्म ऐसे ‘मालवा’ में हुआ जहाँ की काली माटी भरपूर उपजाऊ है साथ में डग-डग पर पानी भी. मैं जिस परिवेश में जन्मी और पली बढ़ी वहाँ चहूँओर स्वर गुंजायमान थे. जिस तरह संगीत के घरानों की खूबियों को सराहा जाता रहा, उसी तरह अलग-अलग संस्कृति के खानपान का भी ऐसा अनूठा संगम रहा, कि क्या कहा जाए… — कलापिनी कोमकली

Once, no raw mangoes had sprouted on our mango tree yet, and we suddenly found a green mango on the ground. Baba cut open that lone mango with a sharp knife, cut long slices out of it, topped it with salt and red chilli powder, and served it to everyone at the table! That too with sounds of aahaa…waah.
