Krishnamani would sit in the far-left corner of the covered porch of her modest one-room house, her gardening scythe resting beside her right thigh within reach. The curved iron blade and its wooden handle varnished by years of being held gave off a dull sheen in the light of the kerosene lamp. This was her spot in the house. After the day’s labors she would settle into her little seat on the floor fashioned out of a few old jute sacks folded into a neat rectangle covered by the tatters of what used to be a Calcutta cotton bed sheet. कृष्णामणि अपने एक कमरे वाले साधारण-से मकान के ढँके हुए बरामदे के सबसे बाऍं कोने में बैठा करती थी, बाग़वानी में इस्तेमाल होने वाली हँसिया उसकी दाहिनी जॉंघ के ठीक पास होती, ताकि ज़रूरत पड़ने पर वह तुरंत ही उसे उठा सके। लोहे की घुमावदार फाल और उसका लकड़ी का हत्था, जो बरसों पकड़े जाने के कारण ख़ासा चिकना हो चुका था, मिट्टी के तेल की ढिबरी की रोशनी में हल्का-सा चमकता था। घर में यह उसकी तयशुदा जगह थी। दिन-भर की मेहनत के बाद वह इस छोटी-सी जगह आकर बैठ जाती थी, जहॉं फ़र्श पर जूट की पुरानी बोरियों को मोड़कर एक चौकोर आसन बना दिया गया था और जिस पर कलकत्ता कॉटन की एक पुरानी चादर की चिंदियॉं बिछी होतीं। शाम होते ही वह इस छोटे-से कोने में अपनी पीठ टिका लेती, दीवार का गोल कोना उसकी पीठ को एक मज़बूत सहारा देता। तब तक वह कई तरह का आटा गूँद कर आपस में मिला चुकी होती, जिससे वह भोरे-भोर तलकर कुछ नाश्ता

കൃഷ്ണമണി അവളുടെ ഒറ്റമുറിവീടിന്റെ കോലായയുടെ ഇടത്തേ മൂലയിലാണ് ഇരിക്കുക. വലത്തേ തുടയോടുചേർന്ന് അവളുടെ കൊയ്ത്തരിവാൾ കയ്യെത്തുംദൂരത്ത് വെച്ചിട്ടുണ്ടാവും. മണ്ണെണ്ണവിളക്കിന്റെ വെട്ടത്തിൽ ഇരുമ്പുകൊണ്ടുള്ള അതിന്റെ വളഞ്ഞ തലയും എത്രയോ കൊല്ലം കൈപ്പിടിയിലിരുന്നു മിനുസപ്പെട്ട മരപ്പിടിയും മങ്ങിയ തിളക്കം പൊഴിച്ചു. ഇതാണ് വീട്ടിൽ അവളുടെ ഇടം. പകലത്തെ അധ്വാനമെല്ലാം കഴിഞ്ഞ് അവൾ തന്റെ ഇരിപ്പിടത്തിലേക്ക് ചുരുങ്ങും – ഒന്നുരണ്ടു പഴയ ചണച്ചാക്കുകൾ
