Lalo showers the door chain
with wood shavings, the only
flowers he can afford,
because Nanak touched it
two days ago. Now sitting on a
cloth spread on the mud floor
Nanak chews on the kodra roti
Lalo has served with saag,
smashed onion and chillies.
The tip of his beard sways
to the cadence of the trees
he passed on the way…

The smell of coconut oil
on the silvery strands of my dida’s hair, after
her timely bath, strictly
on schedule, like everything
in her North Kolkata home, wafted
far into the Himachal town where my family lived,
in the Horlicks glass jars, tightly sealed,
inside brown balls of grated coconut, fried
in dark molten jaggery, and sprinkled with
just enough camphor, to bring the fresh morning
of a durga puja all the way to me and my little sister.

The day before Shasthi
Before the goddess is consecrated.
There’s a gathering of food – bring your own, potluck
Money on the table.
Each-one-bring-one.
Fish chops, kochuri aloo, chicken biryani & mochar chop
Dal roti and ghugni
All finger lickin’ good.
The payment is made with utmost discretion…
