खुली आग के ऊपर लोहे की तिपाई है, उस पर एक बड़ा बर्तन रखा हुआ है, सबकी निगाहें उस पर लगी हुई हैं। जब बर्तन खड़खड़ाता है, सब लोग तारीफ़ में आहें भरने लगते हैं। तभी कोई ढक्कन पर भारी पत्थर रख देता है और खड़खड़ाहट बंद हो जाती है। ‘चलो, पीछे हो जाओ, जाकर सो जाओ।’ मॉं या मौसी की गूँजती हुई आवाज़ हमें दूर भगाने की कोशिश करती है। ऐसे मौक़ों पर हम अपनी सॉंस रोक लेते। उकड़ूँ बैठकर हम अपने घुटनों को ठुड्डी से सटा लेते और आग को घूरते रहते। सबकी निगाहें आग पर टिकी हैं। अगर आग बुझ जाती, तो बर्तन में ऊपर तक भरी वह सामग्री पक न पाती। हम आदि जनजाति के एक विशिष्ट व्यंजन ‘एटिंग’ को बनाने में…

അടുപ്പിനു മേലെ വെച്ച ഇരുമ്പു മുക്കാലിയിലെ വലിയ കലത്തിന്മേലായിരിക്കും എല്ലാവരുടെയും കണ്ണ്. അതിന്റെ അടപ്പ് കുടുങ്ങാൻ തുടങ്ങുമ്പോൾ കൂട്ടത്തോടെ ഒരു ആർപ്പുയരും. ആരെങ്കിലും ഉടനെ കനമുള്ള ഒരു കല്ലെടുത്ത് അടപ്പിനുമേലെ വെയ്ക്കും, അതോടെ കുടുങ്ങൽ നിന്നുപോവും. ‘പോയിക്കിടന്നുറങ്ങ്, നീങ്ങിയിരിയ്ക്ക്.’ ഏതെങ്കിലും അമ്മയോ അമ്മായിയോ…
